A Legacy of Youth Empowerment & Community Development
For over two decades, the Pokuase Youth Association (POYAS) has been a beacon of youth-driven change, fostering unity, cultural pride, and sustainable development. What began in 2004 as the Unity Week Celebration has grown into a movement that empowers young people through leadership, skills training, health initiatives, environmental sustainability, and digital transformation.
To strengthen the Unity Week Celebration, ensure its sustainability, and expand youth-led community projects, the Pokuase Youth Association was officially founded and registered on March 18, 2013. The first Executive Board members who played pivotal roles in shaping the association’s foundation and relevance were:
- Edmund Palmer-Quarshie
- Ishmeal Ankrah
- Gilbert Amponsah Dodoo
Their leadership and vision helped establish POYAS as a platform for youth engagement, innovation, and advocacy, ensuring that young people remain at the forefront of Pokuase’s development.
Overcoming Challenges & Early Milestones
Like many grassroots organizations, POYAS faced significant funding challenges in its early years. The association relied heavily on community donations, but resources were often insufficient to sustain and expand key initiatives. Despite these obstacles, POYAS remained resilient, mobilizing local support, securing partnerships, and fostering a strong spirit of volunteerism.
The Unity Week Celebration became a cornerstone event, attracting participation from both local and diaspora youth. In 2024, during its 20th anniversary, the event was rebranded as the Abele Festival (AbeleFest)—a week-long celebration embedded within the Pokuase Homowo Festival, dedicated to cultural preservation, youth engagement, and economic empowerment.
AbeleFest: A Celebration of Culture, Unity & Progress
AbeleFest is more than just a festival—it is a symbol of identity, unity, and progress for the people of Pokuase. Over the years, it has grown into a platform for cultural heritage, entrepreneurship, and social impact. The festival spans an entire week and includes a diverse range of activities:

Commitment to Sanitation & Environmental Sustainability
